Network Switches connect network segments or network devices. They receive a message from any device connected to it and then transmit the message only to the device for which the message was meant.

Using a switch splits a larger collision domain into smaller ones in order to reduce collision probability and improve overall throughput. Switch enables the creation of Access Control Lists (ACLs), which can control the specific network traffic of users by using simple “allow” and “deny” statements. Additionally, switches let you view the MAC address table to see what devices and users have accessed your device. This way, you can take steps to prevent unauthorized access.
